A TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION TO RESOLVE TENSIONS 

The Solomon Islands Government is setting up a Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to look into the ethnic tensions in the Solomon Islands. Five commissioners will be selected - three Solomon Islanders and two international ones who will collect and process stories from both victims and perpetrators of the violence. The 3 local Commissioners must be known to have integrity & credibility and be trusted by all Solomon Islanders, while the two international ones will be selected from nations such as Papua New Guinea, Fiji, or Peru. 

At the end of the enquiry  the TRC will report on ways that the Government can address the issues of: compensation, forgiveness by law, the underlying causes of the tension and strategies to address these issues. The media and regional workshops are already being used to explain the key features of the TRC to the nation with Christian Churches hopefully being involved to provide spiritual guidance and prayer for the TRC process.

Please pray:

* for the selection process of the commissioners, that those whom God wants appointed will be selected. Pray also for the right support staff to be selected for this difficult role.

* for the protection of both Commissioners and their support staff.  Many of the politicians and people who may have been behind the starting of the tension, together with the former militants involved in the violence, fear the TRC and what it will uncover so both commissioners and staff are at some measure of risk in the situation.

* that the Government will invite the Churches into the process so that prayer may arise within the Solomons to undergird and support the work of the Commission.
