Kira Kira Transit House (Makira) - July 2008 When we arrived we got straight to the work. We started on the kitchen and the old bathroom as they are going to be come one bedroom. Then for the next few days when it was not raining, we worked outside on plumbing and the toilet block located at the rear of the house. Nicholas (a local leader) and the boys arrived to give us a hand and they started by taking out the old ceiling and digging the septic tank hole for the new toilet. While it was still raining I started painting inside, while Brian worked on the Kitchen. The team went to work immediately putting up the new ceilings and doing some painting and helping out where they could. Then when we got a fine day we put half the roof on because it started raining again, so couple of days later we put the other side on and the local boys nailed it off for us. Nicolas and the boys worked very well with us and it was a joy to have them help us in the project. Over the next few days we were all busy. Some of the team members were painting around the window frames, some were painting the front veranda, Brain and Luke were hooking up the water to the new toilets and putting the hand basins in. I was inside painting the undercoat while it was dry. Then after that I painted the out side on a day when the weather was fine. I had Keith sparing saws for me, when he was not helping with the ceilings. Steve was our chief cook so when he was not at the market he was painting and helping out. David was on the barrow one day shifting soil to stop the water getting under the building and he also helped with painting. So it was good to see it all coming together. We all worked hard in the last couple of days to see it finished. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have been praying for us and for the support that was given towards this project. I want to thank God for his protection over the team while we were away and that we all returned home well. Click on Photo Gallery photos to enlarge:
Auki Transit House (Malaita) Restoration of the Auki Transit House and SSEC Offices involved substantial repairs to the Kitchen area and remodelling of the bathroom and toilet areas in the accommodation house. The Transit flat downstairs required extensive repairs including waterproofing and repair of termite infestation. Now that the Transit House has been restored to functionality, it is fully utilized for the benefit of Church Leaders, Christian workers and visiting teams. Restoration has contributed to unity among SSEC people in Auki. Similarly, restoration of the SSEC offices located near the Transit House has reinstated the building as a useful asset. Restoration included repairs to rooms and installation of two toilets. Now that repairs are complete, the whole office block has been rented to World Vision for the next four years. Maintenance of the offices will be undertaken by World Vision during the period of their tenancy. Click on pictures to enlarge.
